With less than 10 days until Halloween we’re getting into the spirit of things here at FitStar. Traditionally Halloween is a sugar-filled holiday, and not just for the kids, either. Are bowls of candy popping up all your workplace or are pumpkin-spiced everythings calling your name? Adults can get sucked into all the sweets just as easily as children, so we’ve rounded up some of our favorite ideas to ensure everyone – from age one to one hundred – can have a happy and healthier holiday.
Try out these 10 healthy spooky foods this Halloween!
#1 – An Orange Pumpkin
Cheap, cheerful and bursting with Vitamin C! Peel clementines, tangerines and/or oranges and stick a small slice of celery in the top for a “stem”.
#2 – An Orange Jack-O-Latern (Filled with More Fruit!)
A little labor intensive, but if you slice an orange and scoop out the flesh (just as you would an actual pumpkin) you can make a miniature Jack-O-Lantern a.k.a Snack-O-Lantern. Fill it with fruit salad and you’ve got a naturally sweet treat.
#3 – Candy Corn Chicken Quesadilla (Without Any Actual Candy Corn)
We love this idea because it’s not sweet, but actually a hearty recipe that’s easy enough to make on your busy Halloween night. Pair it with a salad or lots of pico de gallo and you’re good to go ghost-hunting.
#4 – Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Witches’ Broomsticks
Who knew spooky food could be this kind of fun? Your kids will love this one and you only need pretzels, mozzarella cheese sticks and chives.
#5 – Carrot and Rice Jack-O-Lanterns
Cooking rice in carrot juice then rolling into a ball makes a fast and healthy side dish for your spooktacular supper. Don’t forget the olives to make it a proper Jack-O-Lantern or top with a bit of celery if you want a regular pumpkin.
#6 – Monster Mouth Bites
Get creative with apple or pear slices, nut butter and yogurt-covered raisins to make these monster mouth and tasty teeth bites. Kids will love them, but we think your coworkers won’t be able to resist, either.
#7 – Chocolate-Date Pumpkin Tartlets
Want to impress all the boys and ghouls (there, we said it) in your office and neighborhood? This recipe is a little more labor-intensive, but super full of nutritious ingredients. Medjool dates, dark chocolate, almond butter and coconut milk pack a sweet and spooky punch.
#8 – Eyeball Soup
Don’t worry, no eyes were harmed in the making of this soup, just mozzarella and olives. But when you float those in a quick homemade tomato soup, this healthy meal takes on the gory side of Halloween so it’s not for the faint of heart.
#9 – Frankenstein Baked Peppers
And the award for “Spookiest Way To Eat Quinoa” goes to this recipe. Stuff your peppers with black quinoa, black beans, black olives and other goodies, then decorate with more tasty treats and your dinner is delightfully done.
#10 – Banana Ghosts
Got bananas and chocolate chips? Then you have the makings of this fun and frightful snack! Simply halve your banana, then stick in a few mini chocolate chips to make eyes and a howling mouth. Economical and enjoyable.
